Representations on Magazine Front Covers

 December 2020

Representation On Magazine Front Covers (Male/Female)

This magazine fits the stereotype of femininity. For instance the world record breaking Katy Perry is portrayed as well dressed and covered in flowers which ultimately emphasises the female stereotype that women care about image and how they are portrayed to society.

This heavy focus on image as well as Katy being the in the foreground and the centre of the cover strongly amplifies the stereotype about femininity and image.

The dominance that pink has on this magazine front cover also allows the reader to understand the femininity of this front cover as pink is stereotypical related to women.

The magazine cover contains celebrity endorsement of a figurehead to most women which could entice more sales

The male target magazine consists of a mid-shot style front cover, this can be a potential convention as it is similar to the female targeted magazine.

The ice white background makes the dark jeans stand out more as well as his facial hair and jawline.

The image also places an emphasis on the males body and strength ultimately  meeting the masculine stereotype of men being strong.

The cover is simple and informative on contrast to the detailed and image based female magazine cover.

As a whole, both magazine covers are great examples of how Neal's theory falls into media and magazine covers, for instance the repetition of the figures being in the foreground as well as the mid shot of the magazine cover is key to show the similarities between male and female magazine covers. Nevertheless there is key differences too which prove Neal's theory falls into both magazine covers. this is evident where the feminine cover focuses on the beauty and image of the figure which supports the female stereotype of image, on contrast to the masculine cover which focuses more on the strength and power that the man has ultimately differentiating it from the feminine cover.

  1. A good post here - both are very traditional representations. Take care with the odd capital eg 'covers. this is' and also consider why these representations were chosen? What oppositinal reading could there be? Are all men/ women like this? Do they want to be? Katy Perry is actually very interesting as the new 'Queen of pop' she knows she can manipulate her image to be whatever she wants.
