Stranger things uses a variety of ideologies from 1980s Including Spielbergian. There is a large amount of weaponized intertextuality throughout the Series.

There are many similarities between Stranger Things and ET, for instance both families of the main character are structured in a similar way, for instance both families are structured in a similar, a single mother trying to make ends meet and 2 sons one older than the other. Additionally there are many Spielbergian scenes and ideologies that are represented in Stranger Things, for instance; the use of bicycles to escape a secretive Government Agency that is hunting them down. Also Eleven (EL) resembles ET, for instance they are both being hidden away from society, in addition they have 'Magical Powers' this can be seen in scenes where they are both being hunted down on bicycles by Government Agents in vans, then ET causes the bikes to fly, whereas EL causes the van to flip over and land on its roof, this is more violent and would possibly not have been appreciated in a PG rated movie or TV show in the 1980s. Ultimately though the Adults are in a Spielbergian Universe
The Shining
Stranger Things additionally takes much influence from Stephen King, this scene of Joyce wielding an axe is strikingly similar to the Shining, in addition the Teens in Stranger Things are in a more Stephen King Universe.
Stand by me
Stand by me is also from the Kids perspective, similar to Stranger Things. There are many links between the two parties as they both go on adventures.
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
There is similarities between Stranger Things and Close encounters too, for instance the communication with an alien or alienated being using lights.
