Radio 1 Breakfast Best Bits With Greg James

Radio one is aimed at under 30's as well as promoting young artists as well as British artists, a prime example being Stormzy. Radio 1 is more enticed  into playing popular music that fits with the younger generations.

In this Radio Show with Greg James, he allows the listener to be involved with the Show, for instance when he states at the start of the show "this is the most famous radio show in the world and it's a privilege to share it with you" this can be very enticing towards younger people as they feel as if they can connect more with Greg and the show.

In addition to this, when the young primary school teacher gets involved with the 'Big Weekend Reveal', Greg says that she "essentially works for radio one now that she has done the announcement" then she is rewarded with a couple of tickets to the 'Big Weekend', this overwhelms the teacher and ultimately creates a caring and generous image for Greg and Radio 1.

As well as this the structure is very thought out, for instance the background music allows a build up of tension as well as a release of tension. This use of background music allows the scene to be more intense than just a podcast, in addition, the use of ambient music allow the listener to be consistently engaged and to not lose focus.

As radio 1 is aimed at younger listeners, Greg James is a fitting character for the task, he creates an image of excitement and being energetic as well as comedic and joyous, this image is easily created through the language that he uses for instance the comedic story about the post man and the letterbox, this can be potentially relatable but ultimately joyous as it creates a domain for people to have fun, this can be on contrast to BBC Radio 2 as there is more of a sophisticated presenter which is aimed at older people.

Radio 1 creates a sense of sarcasm around the older generations with a more casual and 'chatty' interviews among the podcast, for instance a hardworking young teacher can be easily associated with Radio 1 as she almost fits the description for who they are aiming for, this creates connections with the radio show and the listeners as well as making it more distinctive as to who they represent.

Emeli Sande: Star Persona

In modern times Emeli Sande states that she "doesn't care about being cool she just wants to sing". This amplifies her views on being different and unique, this can also be viewed in her music.

She understands that there can be power presented through music. This is also evident through her song 'Heaven' which is a very powerful song about emotion and how you wake with good intentions but as the day goes on things get in the way. it is ultimately about being human.

Emeli Sande is a mix of Gospel and Pop which makes her a unique artist in the pop genre, she has written songs for Cheryl Cole, TInie Tempha, Professor Green, Alicia Keys, Britney Spears and Katy Perry

Cultural Context

In this Magazine cover there is traditional gender culture represented, this is evidently represented through the pink text over the pink flowers. The mass of pink flowers almost fills the front cover but masked by them is a woman. This high usage of pink strongly emphasises the amount of femininity as culturally, Pink is associated with women and Blue is associated with Men.

In addition to this the woman is in the background of the photo, cast behind flowers and the text. This could link to women being traditionally and historically through culture "inferior" to men.

Fun with Fonts

Bold fonts and Strong Fonts

Bold and Strong fonts display power and importance, they are more assertive than italic or soft style fonts.

They can be used to display importance/ key information. Usually most headlines are in bold to amplify their importance.

Wavy Fonts

Wavy fonts can invite fun and creativity into your writing, they are great for marketing and advertising, they are less serious than bold as well as being less assertive.

Historic Fonts

They can be used to implement an understanding of time as well as emphasising the age of what is being written about.

Graffiti

Graffiti can be used to give a sense of criminality, or juvenile behaviour.
It is associated with vandalism and instantaneously creates a feeling deliberate neglection.

History of magazines

Historical Context in the media

In this poster, there is clear historical context that allows the reader to understand how codes and conventions have continued or changed over the past.

one simple convention is the date, this is a convention as it is still used today to mark a time point as to when the magazine was distributed.

The picture depicts 6 well dressed young men who are learning mechanics, this is very stereotypical of the times and can be a code as it portrays the mechanics industry as intellectual and male dominated. This would be different in today's climate.

As they are dressed in fine clothing, it instantaneously gives the reader the idea that the mechanics are of higher class and importance

A convention would be the car as it is expected to be featured on a magazine targeting motorists and self learning mechanics.

The front cover of this magazine is ultimately a metaphor for itself as it depicts a man teaching men about mechanics and that is what the magazine is aiming to do.
